Work Experience
2006 to 2008: SAP ABAP Developer and Basis/NetWeaver Administrator for OneSteel
Straight out of University, I took up a 2 year position in the IS department of OneSteel, the largest steel making and distribution company in Australia. I spent 18 months as an ABAP developer, which also included upgrading the SAP systems from 4.6c to ECC 6.0, and support problem solving. The last 6 months was spent as a Basis/NetWeaver Administrator, which involved monitoring the systems, and troubleshooting support problems. I took over control of the ECS scheduling system during these 6 months, and had exposure to Solution Manager and portals.
2005: Researched and authored the 2006 Internet Technologies course for the University of Newcastle.
Following the completion of my degree, I was approached by the University of Newcastle to author the Internet Technologies course material for 2006. I was required to make necessary alterations to the material presented in 2005, as well as research and create new material in areas such as AJAX and VoIP. I was the sole author of all content required for the course including lecture slides, tutorials, assignments, and extra study notes for both the local and distance learning centres. The materials will also be used in several international universities around Singapore. I had a great time performing this task, and was honoured to be both approached and trusted to perform the duties.
2005: Tutored a Java Programming course at the University of Newcastle
In 2004 I did some voluntary tutoring of the Java programming course, and enjoyed it so much that I applied to tutor it during 2005. The course introduces the fundamentals of programming, and how to apply the theory to an object-oriented programming language. The tutoring involves running through the material for the lesson, and giving one-on-one help with student questions. I feel confident in performing this tutoring role, and have enjoyed every minute of it.
2003 to 2005: Tutored a Web Development course at the University of Newcastle
I took on the role of a Web Development tutor as I have extensive practical experience in developing webpages, and feel confident in the material of the course. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and every year I am personally asked to tutor the course again. I have received high praise from the students that I taught, including some students indicating their appreciation to the lecturer. I was highly motivated to the course, setting a record for the most assignments marked throughout the year, and worked unpaid overtime on several occasions. The course primarily covered webpage design using XHTML, JavaScript, and XML.
2004: Worked in a team of 3 to design and develop an interactive CD promoting Computer Science as a career.
This voluntary work involved consultation with lecturers and high school students to ensure that the information presented on the CD would be correct and appealing to the intended audience. Many hours were spent brainstorming and on the design of the CD, where I often took a leadership role to forward the project and ensure that we were spending the most time on things of high importance.
2004: Co-organised and participated in Java programming tutorials and helpdesk sessions for first year University students.
A fellow student and I set up voluntary Java programming tutorials for students having difficulty learning the concepts and application of their degree studies. We decided to set this up because many students doing the programming subjects have great difficulty understanding the seemingly-abstract concepts that are introduced to them. Having prior done the course, we felt we could help explain the concepts in a way that would be understandable to students. Many students thanked us for our assistance, especially following their exams.
2003: Developed an interactive survey in Adobe Acrobat for the University of Newcastle Health department.
The lecturer of the Web Development course recommended me for this job, which I undertook in a voluntary manner. Using the JavaScript and form features of Adobe Acrobat, I set up a survey that would submit the results to an email address where they were gathered and analyzed.
2000 to 2001: Worked as a cook at a Burger King franchise - Glendale, Newcastle.
I was the 14th person to be given a position on-the-spot during the interview with the store manager, prior to the opening of the new store. I enjoyed all the aspects of the job, including the cooking and cleaning. I worked up until the HSC examinations at school, where I left to focus on study.
1999: Undertook 5 days of work experience at CSC (formerly BHP Information Technology)
As part of the high school curriculum, I spent 5 days at the BHP Information Technology department in Newcastle, where I was involved with many of the tasks of the company including repairing and installing computer terminals, performing data migration between computers, and configuring network routers. I received a very complementary report, including comments such as:
Showed high interest and motivation towards the work
 Excellent attendance and punctuality
Well dressed and showed a friendly attitude
